At the top of the Commercial Road shopping precinct sits Cascades, the covered mall that has anchored Portsmouth’s city-centre shopping since it opened in 1989. Under its glass roof you will find the big high-street names, a run of independent stalls and enough under one roof to fill a wet afternoon without stepping outside.
It is not the biggest centre in the area, that title goes to Gunwharf Quays down by the water, but Cascades is the everyday workhorse of the city centre, a short walk from the stations and ringed by the rest of the Commercial Road shops. Here is what is inside, where to eat, and how to get there.
What is inside

The anchor tenants are the ones most people come for. Primark takes up a large chunk of the centre, and you will also find H&M, TK Maxx, Next, The Fragrance Shop, Lush and The Body Shop, alongside a Sports Direct and a scattering of fashion, phone and gift shops.
The line-up changes with the high street, as it does everywhere, so expect the usual churn of names coming and going. For families there are the likes of Smiggle and Accessorize, and for phones and tech you have EE and Sky stores on site.
The quieter treat is Kingswell Path, a run of independent units tucked along one side of the centre. This is where you find the quirkier fashion, international sweets, fabrics and a nail bar, the sort of small traders that give the place a bit more character than a standard chain-filled mall.
Food and a coffee break
For a sit-down or a takeaway between shops, the centre has a Starbucks, a Subway and Boswells, the long-running coffee stop that locals have used for years. It is enough to recharge mid-trip without leaving the building.
If you want more choice, you are spoilt just outside. Commercial Road and the nearby streets are lined with cafes, bakeries and chain restaurants, and Guildhall Walk and Gunwharf are both a short walk away for a proper meal.
Getting there and parking

Cascades sits on Commercial Road, PO1 4RL, in the pedestrianised heart of the city centre. It is an easy walk from both Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour stations, and almost every city bus passes through the nearby interchange, so you rarely need to drive.
If you do come by car, the centre has its own multi-storey car park on the upper levels, with access off Marketway. It is handy for a big shop when you have bags to carry, though the city-centre streets around it can be slow on a Saturday.
The centre sits at the northern end of the Commercial Road precinct, a few minutes from the Guildhall.
Opening hours
The centre keeps standard high-street hours, broadly 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and roughly 10:30am to 4:30pm on Sunday, with the big stores such as Primark often matching those times. Individual shops set their own hours, and the centre extends them in the run-up to Christmas.
Those times shift from shop to shop and change on bank holidays, so if you are making a special trip for one particular store it is worth a quick check before you go. A seasoned local shopper put it simply when we asked about timing a visit.
Go on a weekday morning if you can. The place is calm, the car park is empty, and you are home before the lunchtime crowds arrive.

Where Cascades fits in
Think of Cascades as the practical everyday half of Portsmouth shopping, the place for a quick Primark run or a browse on a rainy day, while Gunwharf Quays handles the designer outlets and the waterside strolling. Between the two, with the open-air Commercial Road shops in the middle, the city covers most of what you could want in an afternoon.
