Finding the right gym in Portsmouth is less about the city running short of options and more about picking from a crowded field. On a compact island you can choose between slick 24/7 chains, a buzzing classes-led studio, a modern university sports centre, big leisure complexes with pools, and proper old-school iron rooms, often within a mile of each other.

To rank them we weighed what members actually talk about: the equipment and how well it is kept, the atmosphere and the staff, the opening hours, the extras like pools, saunas, classes and parking, and the value for the monthly fee. Google ratings fed in as a sense check, but a gym that nails one thing brilliantly can still beat a jack-of-all-trades.

Scores are out of ten across the whole package, so a friendly independent with great weights can outscore a bigger name that feels tired. Memberships and prices shift often, so treat any figure as a guide and confirm before you sign. Here are eight of the best, from the top down.

1. Fusion Fitness

Fusion has turned a gym membership into something closer to joining a club. Based at the Partnership Park off Rodney Road, its Portsmouth site is the flagship of the group, kitted out with brand-new equipment and built around high-energy, Hyrox-style group classes that mix cardio and weights. The community side is the real draw: members talk about track runs, socials and a genuine family feel as much as the training itself, which keeps motivation high and attendance sticky.

If you prefer to put headphones in and train alone it is still a strong gym, with a large floor downstairs, but you would be missing the point. This is a place to be pushed by a coach and a crowd.

Why it is number one

Top-end kit, excellent classes and a community that turns exercise into a social habit.

The catch

The class-led, sociable style is not for everyone, and the buzz means peak times are lively.

For anyone who trains better with people around them, nowhere in the city does it better.

2. Anytime Fitness Southsea

Right in the heart of Southsea at Handleys Corner on Palmerston Road, Anytime Fitness pairs a prime location with round-the-clock access. It is open 24 hours, the equipment is new and well spaced, and members single out the staff again and again for being friendly and genuinely helpful, which matters most to anyone nervous about walking back into a gym. Air conditioning, clean showers and a recovery area round it off.

It is a premium option rather than a budget one, and being in the middle of Southsea it has no car park of its own, so it suits people who live or work nearby and will walk or cycle in.

What stands out

A welcoming, well-run 24/7 gym with new kit in the best part of Southsea.

Worth knowing

It sits at the premium end on price and has no dedicated parking.

For a friendly, central gym you can use at any hour, it is the standout in Southsea.

3. Jetts 24HR Gym

Over at Anchorage Park, Jetts has built a loyal following by leaning into community and recovery. It is another 24 hour gym with a clean, modern, constantly updated floor, but what members rave about is the extras and the atmosphere: cold plunges, a sauna, regular challenges and events, and staff who make the place feel welcoming. Several reviewers who left the forces mention finding the same team spirit here.

It is a little out of the centre, which suits drivers more than those on foot, but the parking and the space are part of the appeal.

The appeal

Strong kit plus proper recovery facilities and a warm, motivating crowd.

Bear in mind

It is east of the city centre, so handier if you are driving.

For training plus genuine recovery and a good community, Jetts is well worth the trip.

4. Ravelin Sports Centre

The University of Portsmouth’s Ravelin Sports Centre on Cambridge Road is one of the newest and best-equipped facilities in the city, and it is open to the public as well as students. The gym floor is large, immaculate and divided into zones, and the building adds a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, a climbing wall and studios under one roof. Members also praise the rare luxury of free parking for a couple of hours.

It can be busy with students in term time, and the climbing is compact, but as an all-in-one sports centre it is hard to beat for the money.

Great for

An all-rounder with a pool, climbing and modern kit, plus handy parking.

One caveat

It gets busy with students during term, and the climbing area is small.

If you want more than just a gym under one roof, Ravelin is the smartest choice.

5. Village Gym

Attached to the Village Hotel on Lakeshore Drive in Cosham, this is the polished, leisure-club option. Alongside a well-stocked 24 hour gym it has a swimming pool, sauna and spa, plenty of classes and a cafe, so a workout can turn into a longer, more relaxed visit. Members consistently praise how clean and professional it feels and how encouraging the instructors are, which makes it popular with beginners.

It sits up at the north of the city near the motorway, so it favours drivers, and the hotel-club setting puts it above budget-gym prices.

Why people join

A spotless club with pool, spa and classes, and a calm, grown-up feel.

The downside

It is north of the city and priced as a leisure club, not a budget gym.

For a gym that doubles as a place to unwind, the Village is the pick.

6. The Gym Group Portsmouth Fratton

For low-cost, no-contract training, The Gym Group on Rodney Road is the obvious choice. It is open 24 hours, recently refreshed with new showers and flooring, fully air conditioned and large enough that you can usually get on the kit outside the early-morning and evening rushes. A women-only area and a parking system add to the practicality, and the monthly fee is among the lowest in the city.

The equipment is functional rather than flashy and it gets genuinely packed at peak times, but for the price that is a fair trade.

What you get

Cheap, flexible, 24/7 access with air conditioning and plenty of machines.

The trade-off

Kit is practical rather than premium, and peak hours are crowded.

If value and flexibility top your list, this is the sensible budget pick.

7. Mountbatten Centre

The Mountbatten Centre at Hilsea is the city’s big municipal sports hub, and its recently modernised gym has won over members with smart new equipment and air conditioning. Beyond the gym floor it offers a swimming pool, an athletics track, courts and plenty more, making it a magnet for families and anyone who wants to mix disciplines rather than just lift and run.

As a large, busy public centre it can feel less boutique than the newer private gyms, and the outdoor track has had its critics, but the breadth of what is on offer is unmatched.

Best for

Mixing sports under one roof, from the gym and pool to the athletics track.

Keep in mind

It is a large, busy public centre rather than a polished private club.

For variety and family-friendly facilities, the Mountbatten is the all-rounder.

8. City Gym

Tucked away on Somers Road in Southsea, City Gym is the proper old-school room on this list. It is unpretentious and built for serious lifting, with real weights, a strong bodybuilding and powerlifting following and, by all accounts, a welcoming owner who has kept regulars coming back for years. There are no frills and no posers, just a friendly, focused place to train hard.

If you want classes, a pool or gleaming machines this is not the gym for you, but for iron and atmosphere it has a charm the chains cannot copy.

Why it lasts

A genuine, friendly lifting gym with real weights and no pretension.

Not for everyone

No classes, pool or shiny extras, and it is deliberately basic.

For old-school strength training with a community feel, City Gym is a hidden gem.

So which gym should you join?

If you thrive on energy and company, Fusion is the standout, with Anytime close behind for a friendly 24/7 base in the middle of Southsea. For facilities beyond the gym floor, Ravelin, the Village and the Mountbatten each offer pools and more, while Jetts adds proper recovery. Watching the budget, The Gym Group is the value call, and for pure iron and character, City Gym wins hands down.

The best gym is the one you will actually keep going to, so weigh location and atmosphere as heavily as the equipment, and take a trial session before you commit.

How we ranked them

Our order reflects the things members raise most often, from equipment and cleanliness to staff, hours, extra facilities and value, sense-checked against public ratings. We included a spread of styles on purpose, so budget chains, premium clubs, a university centre and an independent all feature. Memberships, prices and opening hours change regularly, so confirm the current details with each gym, and if you can, visit on a day pass first to see how it feels at the time you plan to train.
