Portsmouth nightlife: a guide to the city’s bars, clubs and live music

When the sun goes down, Portsmouth shifts gear. For a compact island city it packs in a surprising amount, from student-packed clubs and late cocktail bars to a live-music scene that punches well above its weight, and most of it sits within a short walk or a quick taxi of the next spot.

The scene splits neatly into a few districts, each with its own character. Here is how our team would map out a night across the city, wherever you happen to be starting from.

Guildhall Walk, the late-night heart

If you want a proper club night, Guildhall Walk is still the centre of gravity. The strip runs past the Guildhall and the university, so it leans young and lively, and the main rooms stay open until around 3am at the weekend.

The Astoria is the biggest name, spreading several music styles across different rooms, while Tokyo Joe’s and the nearby Sugar Shack keep the dancefloors busy. Hampshire Boulevard, just off the strip on St Pauls Road, is a long-standing student favourite. The one change worth flagging is that the old Pryzm has closed, so the crowd it once pulled now spreads across the venues that remain.

Albert Road and Southsea, the independent side

For something more relaxed and a lot more independent, head for Albert Road in Southsea. This is the city’s bohemian quarter, a run of small bars, micropubs and kitchens where the mood is conversation over carnage.

Southsea Spirit and Gin and Olive are the kind of characterful spots the area does so well, The Kings mixes a proper pub feel with a decent kitchen, and around the corner on Palmerston Road, Go Rogue carries the night later with a bar-into-club feel. It is the part of town to drift between places rather than commit to just one.

Down on the waterfront, Gunwharf Quays trades the grit for glass and harbour views. The bars here are polished and mostly part of national names, which makes it a reliable, easy option if you are meeting a mixed group or carrying on after dinner or the cinema.

The Liquorist and Slug and Lettuce both run cocktails into club hours, The Alchemist is known for its theatrical, colour-changing drinks, and The Old Customs House gives you a more traditional pub anchor among the glossier spots. It is the safest bet for a straightforward late drink by the water.

Live music and comedy

Portsmouth’s live scene is its secret weapon. The Wedgewood Rooms on Albert Road is the institution, a mid-size venue that has hosted countless rising bands over the decades and doubles as a comedy room.

KOLA on Granada Road and a handful of pub stages keep grassroots music going, and in the warmer months Live at the Bandstand brings gigs to the Southsea seafront. The Jolly Sailor on Clarence Parade is a dependable shout for a band and a pint.

Getting home, and a few tips

A few practicalities keep a Portsmouth night running smoothly:

  • the island is small, so black cabs and app taxis are plentiful, though queues build fast at 3am on Guildhall Walk;
  • the last trains from Portsmouth and Southsea and from Portsmouth Harbour run late evening, so check the times if you are heading off the island;
  • midweek is quieter and cheaper, with student nights driving the biggest crowds in term time;
  • pace yourself and keep an eye on your group, especially around the Guildhall Walk crush at closing.

Most of the club action clusters around Guildhall Walk, so it makes a sensible base for a big night.

Whatever your speed, the city rewards a little planning. Line a couple of those up, sort the taxi home, and Portsmouth after dark takes care of the rest.
