Train fares to Portsmouth swing a lot depending on the ticket, so a little planning can cut the cost of a trip by half or more. The price has far more to do with when you book and which ticket you pick than with the distance you travel.

Portsmouth And has gathered the ticket types, the railcards that knock a third off, and the small habits that keep the fare down, from National Rail and the train operators.

Ways to save at a glance

The biggest savings come from a handful of simple moves:

  • book an Advance ticket for a specific train, well ahead;
  • carry a railcard if you qualify, for about a third off;
  • travel Off-Peak rather than in the morning and evening rush;
  • buy a return or a day ticket when it beats two singles;
  • check the price for children, who often travel for very little.

Each of these is worth a closer look, starting with the ticket types themselves.

Ticket types and when each is cheapest

The name of a ticket usually tells you when you can use it. These are the main ones.

TicketWhen it is cheapestNotes
AdvanceBooked ahead for a set trainThe cheapest, but tied to that train and sells out
Off-PeakOutside the morning and evening rushFlexible on the day, some busy trains excluded
Super Off-PeakThe quietest timesTighter time limits, cheapest walk-up where offered
AnytimeAny train, no time limitThe dearest, fully flexible
Season and Flexi SeasonRegular commutingWeekly, monthly or part-time passes

For a single trip, an Advance ticket booked early is almost always the lowest fare, with Off-Peak the best flexible option if your plans might change.

Railcards: a third off most fares

If you qualify for a railcard it is usually the single biggest saving, and most take a third off.

Portsmouth sits inside the Network Railcard area, so that card covers journeys to and from London and across the South East. Any of these pays for itself in a couple of trips, so it is worth having if you travel more than occasionally.

Booking ahead and other ways to save

Beyond the ticket type and a railcard, a few habits help:

  • book Advance fares as early as you can, as the cheapest ones sell out first;
  • compare a return against two singles, since two singles are sometimes cheaper;
  • travel as a group of three or more, where GroupSave can take a third off off-peak fares;
  • let children travel on a child ticket, with Southern’s Kids for £2 offer bringing some child singles down to £2.

Contactless pay-as-you-go does not stretch down to Portsmouth, so buy a ticket before you travel rather than tapping at the gate.

The cheapest fares to Portsmouth

The actual price depends on where you start. From London, an Advance single to Portsmouth starts at around £10.10 with South Western Railway when booked ahead, and other routes have their own Advance fares. Because the cheapest tickets sell out and prices move with the date, check the live fare for your journey rather than relying on a fixed figure. For the London route in detail, see our guide to London to Portsmouth by train.

Where to buy

Buy your ticket from any of these, all at the same fares:

  • the National Rail website or app;
  • a train operator’s website or app;
  • a ticket machine at the station;
  • a staffed ticket office, where one is open.

Whichever you use, booking ahead for an Advance fare and adding a railcard make the biggest difference. For the stations you will arrive at, see our guide to Portsmouth’s train stations.

How to pay less

What is the cheapest train ticket to Portsmouth?

An Advance single booked as far ahead as you can, with a railcard on top if you have one. From London these start at around £10.10.

Do railcards really save money?

Yes. Most take a third off, so a £35 card pays for itself in a couple of journeys if you travel more than now and then.

Is it cheaper to buy online or at the station?

The fare is the same either way, so buy wherever is easiest, but book Advance tickets online ahead of time for the lowest price.

How cheaply can children travel?

Often very cheaply. Child tickets are heavily discounted, and Southern’s Kids for £2 offer brings some child singles down to £2.

How far ahead can I book an Advance ticket?

Advance fares usually go on sale up to around twelve weeks before travel, and the cheapest sell first, so book as early as you can.

Can I use a railcard with an Advance ticket?

Yes. Choose your railcard when you book and the discount comes off the Advance fare.
