The best vets in Portsmouth: 7 practices rated on reviews, care and value

Portsmouth is a city of pet owners, from the dogs walked along the seafront every morning to the cats quietly ruling the terraced streets of Southsea, and a good vet is one of those things you barely think about until you urgently need one. This is our ranking of the practices that owners across the city rate the most.

We went at it the way an owner would, by trusting other owners. Our writers pulled together every Portsmouth practice with a meaningful number of Google reviews and read through them, then scored each on the same handful of measures, how highly it is rated and by how many people, the standard and breadth of its care, how calmly it handles a frightened animal and a worried owner, and whether the bill feels fair. The reviews count for most, because a crowd of owners who have sat in that waiting room at their lowest tell you more than any clinic website ever could.

We have stuck to general day practices here. For an out-of-hours emergency the city has dedicated night and weekend services, which we flag at the end. And since this is a dog-walking city, a good vet pairs well with our guides to the best coastal walks and the most welcoming dog-friendly pubs once the check-up is done.

The list runs from the best down, starting at the top.

1. Grove Veterinary Surgery, Southsea

The one locals name first, Grove on Elm Grove is an independent Southsea practice with a devotion that borders on the religious, a 4.8 average and reviews from owners who travel back from other counties rather than leave. Greg and the team get singled out for care that goes well beyond the routine, and more than one review mentions a pet whose life they almost certainly saved. Prices come up again and again as fair, which for an independent is no small thing. A routine consult sits around £40 to £55.

Why owners rate it

  • A 4.8 average and fierce loyalty from long-term clients;
  • An independent practice with genuinely personal care;
  • Praised for going beyond the routine in tricky cases;
  • Fair, transparent pricing for an independent.

A few things to note

  • So popular that registering can take time;
  • Closed Sundays, with limited Saturday hours.

If you want the practice Portsmouth pet owners trust above all others, this is it.

2. The Cat Clinic, Southsea

Something different, and brilliant at it, The Cat Clinic on Albert Road treats cats and only cats, which means no barking dogs in the waiting room and a far calmer visit for a species that loathes a vet trip. A 4.8 average across hundreds of reviews praises the gentle, cat-savvy handling and the clear advice. For a nervous cat it is well worth seeking out. Routine consults land in the usual £40 to £55 range.

Why owners rate it

  • A cats-only clinic, so no dogs and a calmer waiting room;
  • A 4.8 average from hundreds of reviews;
  • Gentle, genuinely cat-savvy handling;
  • Clear advice without the hard sell.

A few things to note

  • Cats only, so no help for dogs or other pets;
  • A single Southsea site, less handy for the north.

The obvious choice if your household is feline and you want a stress-free trip.

3. Downland Vets, Hilsea

Up in Hilsea on Military Road, Downland is a calm, well-run practice with a 4.8 average and a reputation for taking its time. Owners mention unrushed appointments, clear guidance and nurses who are especially gentle with anxious and elderly animals. Good communication, with appointment reminders by text, rounds it off. A routine consult runs around £45.

Why owners rate it

  • A 4.8 average with a calm, unrushed feel;
  • Especially gentle with nervous and elderly pets;
  • Clear guidance rather than a push to medicate;
  • Good communication and handy for the north of the city.

A few things to note

  • Closed Sundays, with limited Saturday cover;
  • Busy, so book routine visits ahead.

A reassuring, no-pressure choice, particularly for an older or anxious pet.

4. Vets For Pets, Southsea

On Milton Road, Vets For Pets is one of the busiest in the city, a 4.6 average from more than five hundred reviews. Part of a national group, it has the capacity and opening hours a small practice cannot match, along with health plans that spread the cost of routine care. Reviews repeatedly praise the kindness of the reception and nursing teams, including real patience with neurodivergent owners. A consult sits around £45 to £55.

Why owners rate it

  • A 4.6 average from over 500 reviews;
  • Longer hours and more capacity than a small practice;
  • Health plans that spread the cost of routine care;
  • A reception and nursing team praised for real kindness.

A few things to note

  • Part of a chain, so less single-vet continuity;
  • Busy, so peak appointment times go quickly.

A dependable, well-staffed option, strong on value through its health plans.

5. The Pet Vet, Cosham

Out at the Cosham retail park, The Pet Vet pairs a modern, roomy clinic with long hours, open into the evening and at weekends, which for a working owner is a real draw. A 4.6 average from close to five hundred reviews highlights urgent appointments fitted in at short notice and prices owners call reasonable. A routine consult is around £40 to £50.

Why owners rate it

  • A 4.6 average from nearly 500 reviews;
  • Long hours, including evenings and weekends;
  • A knack for fitting in urgent appointments;
  • Reasonable prices and easy parking at the retail park.

A few things to note

  • A retail-park setting rather than a neighbourhood feel;
  • Busy at weekends, so call ahead for urgent cases.

The practical pick for a busy household that needs evening and weekend slots.

6. Harbour Veterinary Centre, Southsea

At the Pompey Centre on Dickinson Road, Harbour’s Southsea branch is a modern, air-conditioned clinic with plenty of parking and a 4.6 average. Owners praise how easy it is to be seen, the calm handling and the compassion shown at the hardest moments. One tip straight from the reviews, it sits in Zone 2 of the Pompey Centre rather than Zone 1, so allow a minute to find it. A consult runs around £45.

Why owners rate it

  • A modern, air-conditioned clinic with good parking;
  • A 4.6 average and easy to get an appointment;
  • Calm handling and real compassion when it counts;
  • Handy for Fratton and the eastern side of Southsea.

A few things to note

  • Tucked in Zone 2 of the Pompey Centre, easy to miss;
  • Closed at weekends.

A smart, modern choice for the east of the city, once you have found the door.

7. Portsmouth Vets, Southsea

The smallest name here but a perfect five stars, Portsmouth Vets on Palmerston Road has built a devoted following on one thing above all, the way it treats frightened animals. Shane and the team are repeatedly credited with turning a dreaded vet trip into a calm one, and they offer home visits, which for a very nervous or elderly pet can change everything. The review count is modest, around thirty, but every one of them glows.

Owners talk about the place the way you would a trusted friend rather than a clinic.

For a pet that panics at the clinic door, a vet who makes the visit calm is worth more than any gadget on the shelf.

Why owners rate it

  • A perfect 5.0, if from a smaller review base;
  • A real gift for calming frightened and reactive animals;
  • Home visits for nervous or elderly pets;
  • A genuinely personal, one-practice relationship.

A few things to note

  • A small practice, so a modest number of reviews so far;
  • Weekday hours only, and limited capacity.

The one to seek out for a nervous pet, or anyone who wants their vet on first-name terms.

What stood out

A clear split runs through the list. The independents, Grove, The Cat Clinic and little Portsmouth Vets, win on warmth, continuity and the loyalty of owners who would not dream of going anywhere else, while the bigger groups, Vets For Pets and The Pet Vet, win on opening hours, capacity and plans that make routine care cheaper. Neither is better in the abstract, it depends on whether you value a familiar face or a free evening.

Geography follows the pattern you would expect, with most of the best names in Southsea and the north covered from Cosham and Hilsea. And as so often, the perfect five-star scores belong to the smallest practices, which is why review volume does so much of the separating near the top.

One gap this list does not cover is the middle of the night. For an out-of-hours emergency, Portsmouth is served by dedicated services around Hilsea, including Vets Now and the 24-hour Harbour Veterinary Hospital at Anchorage Park, so it is worth saving a number before you ever need it.

How the scores were built

The scoring is weighted rather than a simple tally of stars. The biggest share, about 35 per cent, goes to the reviews and overall reputation on Google, a quarter to the standard and breadth of the clinical care, 15 per cent to value judged against what a routine consultation actually costs, another 15 to consistency, which is where the number of reviews earns its keep, and the final 10 to the gentle handling of frightened pets and how easily you can get through the door. Our writers weighed the open information and set the clinics side by side rather than booking any animals in for treatment, and the figure we used for value, very roughly £40 to £55 a consultation locally, is only a guide and it moves, so confirm fees and hours with the practice first. Treat this as an editorial snapshot from October 2026, a considered opinion and not an official or clinical verdict, and expect the order to drift as practices change and the reviews pile up.
